Auction Flex requires all secondary computers to be networked to the primary (server) computer in order to read and change data. The steps below will set up a simple network between two XP computers using a crossover cable.
Needed Equipment:- Category 5 (Cat 5) crossover cable. You can purchase these in different lengths, typically 5', 10', 15' and 20'. They can be purchased from any computer or department store, such as Staples, Best Buy, Target, or Wal-Mart.
- Fully functional Ethernet Adapters (Network Cards) installed on both computers
1.Connect each end of the Cat 5 crossover cable to the network card on each computer.
2.Boot both computers and log on to Windows.
3.In order for both PCs to communicate, the Ethernet adapters will need to be configured with static IP addresses and a common Subnet mask. For example, assign the first PC the IP address of 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2. Both machines should use the Subnet mask 255.255.255.0. To configure the network card, go to Stat->Control Panel->Network Connections. Right-click on the Local Area Connection and select Properties. In the list, find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Highlight it and click Properties. Enter the IP address and Subnet mask you will use and click OK. Repeat the process for the second computer.
4.Both PCs have a common workgroup name of 15 characters or less. A simple workgroup name, such as MSHOME or AUCTION, is recommended. To change the workgroup, go to Start->Control Panel->System->Computer Name. Click Change, and edit the workgroup name. Repeat for the second computer, ensuring that both computers have exactly the same workgroup.
5.Reboot both computer systems.
6.Once you get the two computers to communicate successfully, you can share files, printers, and an Internet connection.
Networking should be completed by someone who is comfortable with assigning IP addresses, maintaining sharing permissions, and troubleshooting hardware.
